Family photos are a beautiful way to capture memories, and choosing the right time of day can make all the difference!
Golden hour—the period just after sunrise or before sunset—offers soft, warm lighting that enhances every portrait. If you're planning a family photoshoot with kids, parents, and multiple generations, these expert posing tips will help you get natural, flattering, and timeless images.
There’s something magical about golden hour—the soft, warm glow, the way the light dances off the water, and the way it makes every moment feel a little more timeless. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful family of five at Lake Eola during this golden window, and the results were nothing short of breathtaking.
As I arrived at the park, the kids were already excited, running ahead while their parents watched with smiles. It was clear from the start that this session would be filled with genuine moments of love and laughter. But beyond just snapping photos, I wanted to make sure the family felt comfortable, natural, and connected in every shot.
If you're planning a family photoshoot —whether as a photographer or for your own family—these
golden hour posing tips will help you capture beautiful, natural portraits that will be cherished for years to come.
Golden hour, which occurs shortly after sunrise and just before sunset, is the best time for outdoor photography
Golden hour, which occurs shortly after sunrise and just before sunset, is the ideal time for outdoor photography because of its soft, warm lighting, which eliminates harsh shadows and creates a flattering glow on the skin. The natural backlighting effect during this time helps separate subjects from the background, adding a dreamy, almost ethereal quality to the images. Additionally, golden hour enhances color tones, making skin appear natural and infusing the entire scene with a rich, golden hue. For this Lake Eola family photoshoot, we started around 5:00 PM, allowing plenty of time to work with the changing light as the sun slowly set, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for each shot.
1. Pose by the Water for a Reflection Effect
One of my favorite shots from this session was taken right by the lake, where the water reflected the golden light, adding a magical touch to the photos. Positioning the family near the water not only created a beautiful backdrop but also added depth and symmetry to the composition.
💡 Pro Tip: Have the family stand at an angle near the water, with a bit of space between them and the lake. This keeps the reflection clean while still making them the focus of the shot.
2. Use the Shoulder Turn for a Flattering Look
Instead of having everyone face the camera straight-on, I guided them into a slight shoulder turn. This simple trick helps create a more flattering, natural pose and adds movement to the shot.
💡 Pro Tip: For couples, have one parent stand slightly behind the other, with their hands gently resting on their partner’s shoulder or waist. This adds depth and a subtle romantic touch.
While the focus of the shoot was on the family as a whole, I made sure to take individual portraits of each family member. These solo shots allow everyone’s personality to shine through, whether it’s a shy smile or a burst of laughter from one of the kids.
💡 Pro Tip: Let kids be themselves! Ask them to twirl, jump, or whisper a silly secret. Natural expressions always make for the best portraits.
The most heartwarming family photos are the ones where you can feel the love. I always remind families to stand close together, touch, and interact—whether it’s holding hands, a group hug, or parents lifting the kids in the air.
💡 Pro Tip: Instead of stiff, posed smiles, ask family members to look at each other or tell a funny story. This creates candid moments full of joy and warmth.
When planning a golden hour family photoshoot, choosing the right clothing can make a big difference in how the images turn out. Soft, neutral tones, earthy colors, and light pastels complement the warm glow of the setting sun, while bright neons and busy patterns can be distracting and take away from the natural beauty of the scene. Encouraging movement during the session—whether it’s walking, twirling, or simply sharing a laugh—helps bring energy and authenticity to the photos, especially when kids are involved. Positioning the sun behind the family creates a stunning backlit effect, giving the images a soft, glowing halo that enhances their warmth and depth. Since golden hour is a short-lived window of perfect light, arriving early and planning ahead ensures enough time to set up and capture every must-have shot before the sun disappears.
